Do I Have Bad Taste in Disney Movies?

When my family talks about evenings in front of the TV, we laugh have numerous of old favorites. My mom watched Beverly Hills, 90210 with my sister. She and I bonded over Dawson’s Creek and the first season of America’s Next Top Model. My Mom, Dad, and I watched Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and The Man From Snowy River. On Friday nights the TV was always on TGIF which my dad always said was a series of shows, not just one show, and would get annoyed when I’d say I was watching TGIF and not Boy Meets World or Family Matters. One of our oldest favorites was Five Mile Creek, a little known, early 80s, Disney-made, TV show about life running a stagecoach in the Australian Outback.

Despite all those shows (and yes, there are many more I could name), we always come back to one that was an integral part of my childhood memories: The Wonderful World of Disney. What child of the 80s doesn’t remember loving this show? It had all the great movies about Davy Crockett, Pollyanna, and The Swiss Family Robinson ! Sometimes it had animated classics (which were the nights I loved the most). Just last night my sister and I were discussing how we loved the opening credits showing clips and pictures from all of our favorites. Our mom used to put out a blanket for a “picnic” and let us eat popcorn in the living room (a rare treat)! Looking back we realize the blanket was for ease of cleanup from the popcorn, but at the time, it was great fun!

A few weeks ago, this came across my Twitter feed:

EPCOTPluto: Boy, I have bad taste in films. RT @laughing_place Rotten Tomatoes ranks Disney’s 50 Animated Films Worst to Best. http://bit.ly/hs8Itr

I immediately clicked on the list, and all I could think was “whoa… I have bad taste too!” I LOVED all of those movies. How could you even begin to rank my beloved Disney films?! Then a friend on Twitter suggested I should make a list. I told him that was crazy, and then I headed to Wikipedia to find a list of Disney films to make my own rankings.

A few things stood out to me:

1. I was going to need to include animated and live action films.
2. 50 wasn't going to be enough movies to show my Disney love (obsession...whatever).
3. This was going to have to be a blog series, not just a single post.
4. There were a TON of amazing Disney films that I absolutely adore that were made before I was born in 1983.

I concluded that this was something I must tackle. So the next few blog posts will be about Disney films. I'll try to keep my commentary to only a sentence or two per film, but I encourage you to comment on how right (or wrong) you think I am in the comments section of each post. I may even pull in my brother-in-law as a guest blogger to share his opinion of Disney films. (He mentioned it first! We'll see if I can get him to blog at least once!)

Next blog post: All the Best Disney Films Were Made Before I Was Born!

  2. Bwahahaha! All to keep 'em coming back for more. ;-)

I've got the first two (of 3) posts written and plan on posting one per week with the first one being posted tomorrow. I figure I can't tease with the intro too long. :)

  3. I’m a child of the 60’s. There was nothing better than Disney on Sunday nights. Disney just keeps on coming. What an amazing corporation. Ever been to the theme parks? Nothing comparable. The movie es and the grandeur of it all still gives me goosebumps.
